Buttock Lift, Buttock Implants, and Fat Grafting Information – Melbourne, Victoria

For patients who are unhappy with the shape of their buttocks, there are several procedures which can be performed in order to make them more attractive. Buttocks come in all shapes and sizes, and may require augmentation by way of fat injections, buttock lifting, buttock implants, or fat flaps in the context of lower bodylifting, or reduction by liposuction, wedge excision or a combination of these. Massive weight loss patients tend to have very flat buttocks. Following augmentation by the methods mentioned above, these patients are extremely happy with the rounded contours of their new behinds. Mr Maxwell offers buttock contouring surgery at his Melbourne, Victoria practice.

Buttock Lift and Fat Grafting

The buttock lift is performed in a manner similar to the thigh lift and arm lift. In this safe and effective procedure, skin is removed from the buttocks to create smoother, more aesthetically pleasing contours. Excess skin is trimmed away, and the remaining skin is pulled taut in order to redefine the patient’s buttock shape. The incision is placed in the crease below the buttock and kept as close to the middle and as short as possible. The technique requires detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the region. Beware the recommendation of  'wedge excisions' below the buttocks which actually flatten the buttocks and leave permanent, unsightly scars.

Fat grafting, also known as fat transfer or fat injections, is performed in conjunction with the buttock lift. In the fat grafting treatment, fat cells are removed from another area of the body and injected into the buttocks in order to create a fuller and rounder contour. Fat grafting also benefits other areas of the body and is particularly effective in the face. However it must be remembered that the results of fat grafting are unpredictable - often the transferred fat does not survive and further fat injections are necessary before the desired shape is achieved. Fat transfer is an imprecise science at the present time. Much research is being done into what is happening at a cellular level when fat is grafted, but this research is still in its infancy.

Buttock Implants

The goal of buttock implants is to create more shapely curves. Buttock implants are an excellent solution for patients who do not have fat deposits elsewhere that can be used for fat transfer.

The procedure begins with an incision hidden either in the crease below each buttock or on either side of the natal cleft hidden in the fold. A pocket is then made between the superficial and deep gluteal muscles and the buttock implants are placed in this deep inter-muscular pocket. Patients can generally go back to work 10 - 14 days after buttock implant surgery, although the full healing period takes several weeks more. It must be remembered that, as with any foreign implant, there is a risk of infection which may lead to extrusion of, or necessitating surgical removal of the implant.
