The Breast Lift Procedure – Mr. Richard Maxwell in Melbourne, Victoria

For women who are self-conscious about having sagging 'ptotic' breasts, Mr. Maxwell offers the breast lift procedure at his practice in Melbourne, Victoria. This procedure, also known as a mastopexy, restores firmness to the breasts and lifts them to a higher, more youthful position. The breast lift is an excellent solution for women whose breasts have begun to lose their shape due to pregnancy, weight loss or the ageing process. Mastopexy may be combined with an augmentation procedure if an increase in volume is required (Augmentation Mastopexy)

Breast Lift Candidates

Over time, as skin loses its elasticity, the breasts can begin to sag. Weight loss, pregnancy and breast-feeding are other factors that can cause the breasts to lose their shape and firmness. The breast lift procedure generally achieves the best results for women with small to medium sized breasts. Women with larger breasts may experience greater benefits from a breast reduction, which provides a lift as well. Sometimes a large implant can achieve a similar effect without the need for an actual tightening procedure. For women who are interested in increasing the volume of their breasts along with restoring them to a higher position, breast augmentation can be performed in conjunction with the breast lift (augmentation/mastopexy).

The Breast Lift Procedure

To begin the mastopexy, an incision is made around the areola and then down to the underside of the breast. Depending on the actual technique used, there may or may not be a short horizontal incision in the infra-mammary fold. The 'vertical technique' leaves a bulge at the bottom end of the vertical scar which needs to be excised at 6 - 12 months following the procedure whereas the 'short horizontal scar technique' does not require a second procedure

Through these incisions excess skin is removed, and the nipple is repositioned higher on the breast. Then the remaining skin is pulled tight over the breast, creating curves that are firmer, higher, and shapelier. Suction drains are used for 24 - 48hrs and are removed prior to discharge.

Smoking is a contra-indication to breast lift surgery.

After Breast Lift

The post-operative management is as for a breast reduction.
